When some authors start the writing, they usually have their intended audience in mind and a marketing plan in place. Thinking about the audience helps them to focus on creating and promoting the right content to sell their books and build their author platform. Even before you venture into writing, you should first be aware of what you are trying to achieve by hand. If you intend is to attract as many readers as possible to sell your book, here are tips to help you target audience. 

 

1. Create your audience persona

 Audience persona will help you to have a better understanding of how to find your book target audience.

To start with, try to describe your target audience in your own words, look for people who enjoy reading the books of your genre and analyze other writers’ audience. 

 List everything you can think of at this very moment based on the information and feedback you have gathered. These reader personas seek to document the real motivations and interests of your audience. You should be able to answer some of these questions about your potential readers. 

Demographics- Who are your audience?

  • Income level
  • Education
  • Family status
  • Occupation
  • Social status

Psychographics (How does your audience think? Why will they be interested?)

2.Find Books That are like Yours

Take the time to identify books that would be in the same class, genre or niche with yours. Search for top-selling books within the same category and make a list of their titles and authors. Once you recognize who your competitors are, it will be easier for you to know your readers because you might as well share the same audience.

 

3. Use Social Media

Now that you have known the top-selling books within your category of writing follow their followers on social media, you can access pieces of information by checking out their posts. Keep an eye for the trends, demographics and habits that might not be obvious, but can help with lots of vital information. You can also connect with online groups and communities that have similar interests.

 

4.Explore Other Channels

A few Google searches will lead you to groups and communities online and sites where your potential readers are already participating in information sharing and promotional activities in your genre. Look at websites of the established and top-selling authors to read up their articles and see readers’ comments. To gain access to other audience, engage in guest hosting and guest posting.

 

5. Ask for Help

In case you have issues locating your audience, ask other existing authors or professionals for assistance. Most authors would love to assist a fellow author in identifying their intended audience and also share knowledge with them. This keeps the book industry on the move.
